DMZ - "De-militarized Zone"

This term originates with military agreements that prohibit conflict in certain areas but it is a (commonly use) misnomer when applied to networks.

It is supposed to mean the buffer area between your internal network and the public (Internet) network. Some people even refer to this entire area as the FIREWALL instead of using this term to mean the routers/gateways/filters and
other devices that protect the outside or the inside of this area.

Another term is "Screened Network"  which is less common but actually more accurate because the DMZ is actually where (most of) the war between you and the outside hacker is designed to occur.

It is this area where many people place their Web server, outside email server, etc.

(Although there are also other architectures where these servers are hidden -- mostly -- behind the inner screen.)
